Back to School: Textbook Savings

If you are sending your adult children off to college you know that there are three school related expenses which make up the bulk of your budget: tuition, room and board, and textbooks. The first two expenses are mostly fixed and predictable costs, while the third is impossible to predict as well as a potential budget buster. You may not be able to predict textbook expenses, but you certainly can reduce them by following these three important steps:

1. Shop Online. Your college bookstore has an ironclad grip on textbook inventory, right? Well, at one time that was a true statement. Today, thanks to the internet, websites have sprung up that sell new and used textbooks at prices much lower than those found on campus. Shop with those retailers who have clearly outlined payment, shipping and handling, and return policies. Scan auction sites too for additional savings.

2. Shop Retail. The big bookstore retailers as well as some of the office supply stores carry some titles. At the very least your student can purchase all of his or her supplies off campus, saving you big money in the process.

3. Shop Used. Your campus bookstore knows that having used textbooks on hand will keep them somewhat competitive. The trick with textbook publishers is that yearly updates can make used copies obsolete: planned obsolescence in action! Still, when I was in school I had one professor who encouraged students to pick up the outdated copies of one book since he knew the cost was outrageous and he planned on referencing it sparingly. Your student may also learn that some of the titles on the professor's list are optional, not mandatory purchases.

Students today no longer have to feel as if they are being held hostage by outrageous textbook prices. Have your student shop wisely and your budget will remain on track.

It's a Hawaiian Luau Baby

The summer is a perfect time to host a Luau. Regardless of your state of residence, you can have a Luau in your backyard. Hawaiian decorations will add to the ambience and make everyone think they are in a tropical place. A Luau is a perfect theme for a retirement, anniversary or birthday party because all ages enjoy them.

A Luau needs some palm trees. Inflatable trees or supplies to make some are found at any party supply store. They can be placed around the backyard or inside the house in strategic locations. If the party will head into the evening and night hours, hang strand of mini white lights. The twinkling lights provide enough light to see and appear as more stars in the sky.

Other decorations can include colorful flowers, streamers, balloons and pineapples. If you have a pool, place floating candles or live flowers inside to float. It provides a touch of elegance to the dcor. A party supply store will have all of the paper products needed to serve food.

Luaus are known for having great food. If cooking for a large group appears to be a daunting task, ask everyone to bring a dish to pass. Make sure they know the theme and see what they can create to contribute to it. Hire someone to professionally roast a pig and use that as your main course. Take a picture of the pig with an apple in its mouth to use in your scrapbook.

Games to play during a Luau include doing the limbo. The traditional game involves two people holding a pole while others dance under while the pole keeps getting closer to the ground. Other outdoor games can include horseshoes and volleyball. If you have an outgoing crowd, a hula contest may also be a fun idea.

Floating Candles - How to Mix Fire and Water in the Nicest Possible Way

Of course, there is a great way to mix Fire and Water (even if it doesn't seem logical at first) - use floating candles. Then it all makes sense.

Obviously, there are two key elements. The container(s) for the candle(s), and the container for the water. But honestly, the only real limit is your imagination, so here are some ideas to get you started.

Short glass cylinders are ideal for floating candles. Or what about using cut-glass wineglasses, or even water glasses, if you don't have glass cylinders? If you're lucky enough to have crystal that can add a shimmering touch, so much the better.

Floating candles look great in large bowls

Large, shallow bowls work well. Brass or copper is great, so is silver, and a large glass bowl will also work well. You can think about mixing flowers and floating candles if the bowl is large enough.

Use normal floating candles, or tea lights in floating holders, or if you're really pressed, tea lights on their own (because their aluminum containers won't crack in the cold water, although you'll need a delicate touch when placing them on the water).

Remember to use a number of candles if the container is of any size; more is definitely better in this type of arrangement.

Translucent gel-based floating candles look particularly good in their clear protective containers. They burn for a long time, so they also make economic sense.

If you set a theme of floating candles at the dinner table or in an entertainment area, you can easily continue the theme into the bathroom.

In a sense, bathrooms are a natural for floating candles. For an initial impact, use floating candles actually in the bath (in your own or the guest bathroom), and then extend the theme using mirrors to reflect the flame and incorporate a windowsill if you have one.

Again, the bath is a natural for a mixture of flowers and candles.

You can then extend the theme into the bedroom. If you are already using pillar candles, incorporating a bowl of floating candles will make a wonderful combination.

Use scented candles carefully

Because they're often used at the dinner table, floating candles tend to be unscented; no one wants fragrance competing with food flavors and aroma. However, if food is not involved, there is also a wide range of scented floating candles to choose from.

You don't have to be formal; you can find floating candles in a wide variety of shapes, ranging from flowers in varying colors (and fragrances) through bugs, insects, leaves and butterflies, to animals and novelty items like ghosts and cartoon shapes and characters.

Floating candles can also work outdoors, although some degree of shelter from the wind (and rain!) is needed. I've even seen them used to great effect on a sheltered fishpond (although I'm not sure what the fish thought about the whole idea!). Some designs have recessed wicks to shelter the flame from unkind winds.

As regards quality, floating candles can be either poured or pressed. The poured ones can often be a better buy, as they are dense and burn for a long time. As always, you get what you pay for, but sometimes the less expensive versions will work perfectly well. Just remember to check the maker's description to see what kind they offer.

There are a couple of obvious safeguards. Make sure the container hold the candle is watertight, and make sure it's not inflammable.

Funerals - Common Questions

In this article we're going to cover some of the most commonly asked questions people have when it comes to preparing for a funeral and try to give some simple answers to them.

The first question most people ask is, "What's the advantage of advanced planning for a funeral?"

If you've never had to plan for a funeral before then you have no idea how much work is involved. There's the mortician, cemetery, clergy, flowers, limo and hearse service and the list goes on and on. Having to do all this the last minute while at the same time suffering through what could be a traumatic loss is more than any one person should have to go through. But with advanced planning, all of this is already taken care of. All that needs to be done is in the days prior to the funeral, make the necessary calls letting whoever is coordinating all this know that the person is deceased. It really does make life a lot easier for those left behind.

Another commonly asked questions is, "What do I do with the body?"

For each family this is a personal decision but many families aren't even aware of the options that they have open to them. The first thing they have to decide is whether this will be a burial or cremation. Then they have to decide who is going to handle the remains. If the body is living outside the state or country in which burial is to take place then plans have to be made for transportation of the body across state lines. There are usually laws governing such transportation. In the case of cross country transportation then the U.S. Embassy has to get involved.

Then there is the question, "How long do I wait before burial?"

This question is usually answered by the religion of the deceased. For example, in the Jewish faith a person must be buried within three days. In other traditions burial must be made within a day of death. What is becoming very common is to have a quick burial within a few days and then have a more elaborate memorial service in the near future.

Another common question is, "What do I do about viewing and visitation?"

Again, this is a personal matter. Some religions don't even allow viewing of the body after death. Also, the family has to decide if the body is even suitable for viewing. In the case of a terrible accident this may not be a good idea. As for visitation, this is also a matter of personal preference though in some religions there is a designated period for mourning and visitation such as in the Jewish faith where the family sits shivah for seven days during which time family and friends come to visit and pay their respects.

Many of the questions about funerals are really a matter of common sense and what is dictated by the person's religion and the laws of the state where they live. If in doubt about anything simply ask your clergy or people in your faith who have gone through the process of having planned a funeral.

When Winning Is the Only Thing That Matters

While Im happy with the Vikings current winning streak and their improved play, I will reserve judgment and praise of their recent performance until after this weeks game with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Pittsburgh is a good team with an 8-5 record. They will provide the toughest competition that the Vikings have faced in the past six weeks.

We will finally see if the Vikings are a legitimate playoff contender.

Now I want to return to an old story called Cruisegate where alleged Vikings players took part in a sex party with prostitutes on board a Minnesota cruise.

It seems as if winning is the only thing that matters to Minnesotas media, fans and Vikings ownership.

Now that the Vikings are winning, the media seems to have shelved this story. The media was convinced that some Vikings players exhibited horrible, immoral and even illegal behavior.

To date media and law enforcement officials have not exonerated Vikings players who allegedly took part in Cruisegate. In fact at least one law enforcement agency has turned the case over to prosecutors to be reviewed.

Were now waiting to see what the FBI and Hennepin County Sheriffs Office does with the case.

Can we assume that the media only reports wrongful and illegal behavior of professional athletes when sports teams in their city are losing? Does the media only care about winning?

Im not sure of the answers to those questions but it does look like it.

The fans are also to blame for the story being shelved. When the Vikings were losing, fans were outraged by the Vikings alleged actions in Cruisegate. The fans were demanding that law enforcement and team officials take action.

Now that the Vikings are winning they dont seem to care about Cruisegate anymore. They only seem to care that their team is winning.

The ownership of the Vikings also seems to have turned a blind eye to the whole affair. Shortly after the story about Crusiegate was made public, Vikings owner Zygi Wilf held a press conference. He promised the community of the Twin Cities that his team would deal with the players involved and that they would be disciplined.

He wasnt even denying the alleged actions of his players. Now that his team is winning, he seems to have forgotten his promise to the people of Minnesota.

The actions of the media, Vikings fans and Vikings ownership are terrible. I believe that they only care about winning football games. Doing the right thing, being a good and productive citizen and following the law seems to mean nothing to the media, fans and ownership.

As long as the Vikings are winning, it seems as if its ok for Vikings players to do what they want. They are free to urinate on someones lawn and then allegedly take part in a sex party with prostitutes. I guess its a win win situation for the devil, isnt it.

Why I Wear An Authentic Ravens Jersey On Monday Nights

Now I am going to tell you why I wear an authentic Ravens jersey when it's Monday Night Football.

More than ten years ago the Cleveland Browns moved from Cleveland to Baltimore and that was probably the best move the owners could possible have made.

Since the franchise became the Baltimore Ravens, they have won the trophy that all football players want to win - the SuperBowl. As a nice bonus they have also been able to sell more tickets than they ever did before, and the people in Baltimore love them.

Even me likes them and I am not even from Baltimore.

This usually doesnt happen to me, but I saw them on TV one night when they were down, but they fought back and turned the game around in a way that gave me the chills.

Since that day I have always cheered for the Baltimore Ravens and that's the reason why I'm wearing my authentic Ravens jersey when watching Monday Night Football.

Does it sound too childish?

When you put a Raven jersey on a fan, this is what happens though. You grow a foot and you feel that you are strong enough to make the Raven's starting lineup.

"If I only had got the chance, I would have showed them all..."

This is what makes football so beautiful. Men can feel like boys again and you forget about everything else until the game is over.
